June 1st, 2004 was the day I registered Mother Me to be my company. The idea was simple. Get some doulas together who just want to focus on postnatal care, who would be supportive, professional and stay up-to-date- on what is happening with new mothers and babies. Now we have an active roster of over 35 doulas (LPN’s and RN’s included) serving the Lower Mainland.
Not much has changed with our goals, but we’ve added many more doulas and many great experiences with our families. Some of our doulas have left to go on to other things and some come back to work a few hours here and there.
We have had our challenges, such as trying to get recognized by the Canadian Government as a service they should support. Through perseverance and the red hair in me, we have been heard.
We are able to have our service recognized and covered under extended medical plans – after 5 years of trying!
We are able to provide services to families that would not be able to afford us, who have no support and really need help. We have served over 800 hours so far.
I am proud that Mother Me uses Made in Canada products, ranging from our clients diaries, Cuddly Wraps, breast warming gels and clothing. We proudly support Canadian producers.
We have been recognized by WestCoast Families as Best Doula Company in the Lower Mainland for 3 years straight. I was also a nominee at the YWCA Woman of Distinction award 2014 in the Entrepreneur Category.
I now teach a Mother Me doula course that supports the methods and values that work best with our doula contractors and clients, and a great partnership with Sprott Shaw College.
I work with an amazing team from my office staff to my doulas to everyone around me that keeps me going. My family, friends, business coach, and Mio, who calls Mother Me our “other child”.
Most of all, thank you as a Mother Me client, we could not be here without you.
